About Our Cricket Club
This is a short history about the formation of the cricket section of Penshurst West YC as well as how it came about with us joining the GRPDCA. The fact the club is still flourishing today is not only a tribute to the early pioneers, but also to the men and women who have followed and dedicated their time and effort on a voluntary basis for the betterment of youth in our area.
There were many individuals who took part in the early days and it would be unfair to single out any with the exception of:
- Ray Bowmer who was the first secretary and the inspiration who motivated us all to form the cricket club.
- Lyle Stubbings the magistrate who was behind the scenes with any help when needed and was always available to any boy or parent who needed advice both on and off the field.
- Ian Hamilton who offered to liaise with Hurstville Council on behalf of the club to solve any problems that may have arisen. It was mainly through his efforts and persistence that the council agreed to construct the nets at Olds Park. These nets have been named after him.
In conclusion I hope these notes and comments will give everyone an understanding of the 1965 formation of the Penshurst West Youth Club cricket section.
